High Point Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: Most Common Venomous Snakes of North Carolina - BEWARE!!

There are currently 37 species of High Point snakes that can be found in North Carolina. Most of them are non-venomous and harmless. Only 6 species are venomous. They are the ones that you need to be careful for.

They are the following:

1.    Copperhead snakes are found throughout North Carolina. They feed mostly on High Point cicadas, lizards, caterpillars, mice and frogs. They can be found in ponds, streams, rocks, and wooded areas. They are classed as pit vipers and can accurately strike when it detects a source of heat. They are patterned and shaped like an hourglass. They have muscular bodies and ridged scales. They have vertical pupils that are similar to cats’ eyes. Their bodies are generally broad in the head and there’s a distinctive slope down the neck. The pattern is generally crossbands with colors ranging from brownish tan, and pinkish tan. The common names include highland moccasin, red oak, and poplar leaf.

2.    Timber Rattlesnake or Canebrake can grow from 36 inches up to 72 inches. They can be found in deserts of North Carolina, far away from the populated areas. They can hide in stumps, rock piles, and other woody surface covers. Their habitats are usually fields, woodland edges, rocky hillsides and swamps. They have brown colors with patterned dark brown crossbands. They have zigzag edged-crossbands. Some canebrakes are solid black, but most of them have yellowish or grayish stripes. They usually feed on smaller animals including snakes and they ambush their prey. They have long venomous fangs, and they have an impressive size. The venom of this snake is neurotoxic and is fatal. They hunt at night and are most active during hot summer months.

3.     The Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake is the largest High Point snake in North America. It is a member of the pit viper. It can grow up to 7.8 feet and can weigh up to 15 kilograms. The color consists of brownish-gray, olive, or brownish-yellow with dark brown diamond blotches in the center. They shelter in burrows and not adept at climbing, however, they are excellent swimmers. They are capable of striking while remaining silent. They ambush on small mammals including rabbits and rice mice. While they are not aggressive, they can be capable of defending their territories and striking many times. It has the longest fangs and the venom is capable of significant bleeding to humans. When bitten, the effect can feel like two hot hypodermic needles and the victim will experience bleeding from the mouth, weak pulse, discoloration, and swelling in the bitten area.

4.     Coral Snake is mostly secretive and likes to spend its time underground. They are commonly identified due to their bright bulbous head. They have red and yellow bands. Non-venomous snakes that look like coral snakes can be distinguished by their red and black patterns. As the mnemonic of red and black, a friend of Jack, red and yellow kills a fellow in traffic lights, it can also be applied to coral snakes. They are mostly elusive and only bites when handled or stepped on. Coral snakes have potent venoms and when bitten, victims should get medical attention immediately.
